The American Medical Association (AMA) Minority Affairs Consortium (MAC) is pleased to announce the candidates/appointments for the 2008 AMA-MAC Governing Council election.

Clara Raquel Epstein, MD

At-Large Representative
Boulder, Colorado
Specialty: Neurological Surgery

Dr. Epstein brings over twenty years of unique experiences in health care disparities to benefit organized medicine and the recipients of health care. She has contributed to provide public education and awareness for colleagues, health care providers and various patient populations both nationally and internationally.

Dr. Epstein shares an interest in helping the AMA to achieve the MAC goals and objectives, and demonstrates experience in related activities most recently through her participation on the MAC HPOI Committee. In 2006, Dr. Epstein was one of ten physicians selected nationwide to serve on the MAC Hispanic Physician Outreach Initiative Steering Committee. The Hispanic Physician Outreach Initiative is a leadership development project designed to increase the leadership and influence of Hispanic physicians in the AMA and organized medicine. The overall goal is to strengthen and enhance AMA advocacy efforts on Hispanic health care and professional issues and better meet the needs of our Hispanic physician members. As an active member, she participated in the enhanced awareness of professional and community issues which were targeted; a needs assessment was created and key issues were identified in the community. As a Neurosurgeon, she has served as a role model throughout her training and practice.

Dr. Epstein recently founded Neurocirujanas, an organization which represents and mentors Mexican Women in Neurosurgery. There are currently 35 members in training and active practice throughout Mexico.
